» Serendipia
El escritor inglés Horace Walpole en una carta fechada en 1754 escribía lo siguiente "",…este descubrimiento es del tipo que yo llamo serendipia, una palabra muy expresiva que voy a intentar explicarle, ya que no tengo nada mejor que hacer: la comprenderá mejor con su origen que con definiciones. Leí en una ocasión un cuentecillo titulado “Los tres príncipes de Serendip”: en él sus altezas realizaban continuos descubrimientos en sus viajes, descubrimientos por accidente y sagacidad de cosas que en principio no buscaban: por ejemplo, uno de ellos descubría que una mula ciega del ojo derecho recorría últimamente el mismo camino porque la hierba estaba más raída por el lado izquierdo—¿comprende ahora la serendipia? "".
Serendip es la transcripción inglesa del nombre persa de la isla de Ceilán. Este es el origen de la palabra Serendipity o Serendipia en su adaptación al castellano, la cual apareció por primera vez en un artículo científico en 1955.
En este caso no podemos hablar de un descubrimiento, sería más apropiado hablar de casualidad o por qué no, de serendipia. Me encontraba en una sesión típica de estrellas dobles trabajando con la ToUcam, grabando con el motor parado para determinar la precisa orientación del chip de la cámara la doble de calibración STT23, cuando de pronto……algo cruzó por delante de la imagen a toda velocidad. Lo había pillado, pasó casi por el centro.

No tenía ni idea de lo que podía ser, en principio pensé que era una estrella fugaz. Con todos los datos que pude aportar, Jesús Tejederas, presidente de la Agrupación Astronómica de Córdoba, realizó un excelente trabajo de investigación y resolvió el misterio. Se trataba de un satélite, en concreto de la basura espacial SL-16, que pasó por la constelación de Casiopea a una altitud de unos 1100 km. con una magnitud de 7,1. La hora estimada fue las 20h 36m 42s, cuando se encontraba sobre las provincias de Salamanca o Cáceres. Efectivamente, desde el lugar que se hizo la observación, Posadas (Córdoba), se encontraba en el cielo del Norte, cruzando Casiopea.
Realmente, cuando Murphy lo permite, aparece fugazmente el pais de Serendipia. Pocas son las ocasiones, pero podemos aprovecharlas. Sólo hay que estar en el lugar adecuado a la hora exacta, quizás entonces se abran las puertas de Serendipia.

Uno de los casos de Serendipia más conocidos fue el del descubrimiento de la Penicilina. Fleming en realidad estaba limpiando su laboratorio cuando descubrió que algunos de sus experimentos habían sido infectados por la bacteria Penicillium chrysogenum (en mi época de estudiante aún se llamaba Penicillium notatum, jeje), otro caso famoso fue el propio descubrimiento de América...recordemos que Colón buscaba un camino a la India...en fin, a lo mejor la próxima vez tienes más suerte y descubres el cometa Benavides...si es que el programa LINEAR nos deja algo a los aficionados :-P

Mizar, hay un montón de serendipias en la ciencia y la de Fleming es la más conocida. Otro caso es curioso es la Finasterida, originalmente usado sólo para la hipertrofia protástica benigna pero con un efecto secundario inesperado, no sólo impedía que se cayera el pelo, si no que salía más. No hay que decir la cantidad de preparados para la alopecia que tienen ahora finasterida.
En otra ocasión contaré una serendipia en toda regla sobre estrellas dobles, en Mizar creo se sabe algo de esto.
rvr, lo de descubrir planetas por aficionados es sólo cuestión de tiempo. Si se pueden detectar con un equipo "modesto", y ya se pueden, dentro de pocos años algún amateur descubrirá alguno.

Rafa, creo que ya hay aficionados que han descubierto exoplanetas aunque quizá sería más correcto decir que han detectado caídas de brillo mínimas en ciertas estrellas que parecen asociarse a tránsitos de planetas sobre ellas. Uno de los más dedicados al tema es un europeo (belga para más señas): Tony Vanmuster.
